The Ice Storm of 2013- Mother Nature?
December 23, 2013

Well, the weather outside is frightful...the forecasters got it right—a major ice storm would pass through Southern Ontario leaving a fierce trail of destruction in its path. And so it did. Julie and I woke up Sunday morning to freezing rain like we’ve never seen in our city of Kitchener before. The trees took the greatest brunt of the damage. Some said it was “raining limbs and branches”. This all took place on the busiest day of the year with thousands of Christmas travellers stranded in airports, and Christmas shoppers stuck at home without hydro. Julie and I were among the estimated 53,000 residents of Waterloo region who lost power. Our hydro was restored after 6 hours, but in the Toronto area, which was hit hard, 250,000 people will be forced to endure the cold and dark possibly until after Christmas.

It was amazing to see the awesome effects of the storm on TV. Once again, in spite of our best laid plans and heavy equipment, it makes you realize just how defenceless we really are against natural disasters when they strike, with or without warning. Some people who were interviewed at the airport, casually called it an act of “Mother Nature”. That’s what we label it when it seems to be just a chance storm out of our control. Oh, we can explain it away with our meteorological charts and weather maps, with its cold fronts and warm fronts and low and high pressures colliding to cause the extreme conditions. Just a freak of nature—or is it? What people refer to as a natural phenomenon, in other words, “Mother Nature” is in actuality, Almighty God.

2013 has been quite a year of “natural” disasters for our nation of Canada. In the month of June, the catastrophic flooding in Calgary, Alberta was declared the costliest disaster in Canadian history with total damage estimates exceeding 5 billion dollars. Over 100,000 people were forced from their homes. In the following month of July, Toronto, Ontario was devastated by a torrential flash flood, accompanied with 110 kilometer winds that shut down the city, setting a record for the most expensive natural disaster in Ontario’s history. Mother Nature? No—Almighty God.

Make no mistake about it—God is a God of love and mercy, but He is also a God of wrath and judgment against sin and defiance of His Son, Jesus Christ who took upon Himself the just penalty for our sins against a holy God. A sacrificial price that we could not pay. A gift freely given to repentant souls received by grace through faith in Jesus, the Savior of the world. When this ultimate gift of God is spurned and rejected, we incur upon ourselves the due consequences of our wilful choice and actions. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living, Almighty God. God is a God of blessing. Psalm 33:12 still holds true- “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord”. However, we, as a nation no longer under God, are enacting profane laws that run against the grain of His divine nature and moral governmental will for us, the latest being the legalization of prostitution, which the Bible clearly prohibits, along with same-sex marriage and abortion. Proverbs 14:34 is the explanation of our dilemma.“Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach (disgrace) to any people”. Truly, we are a disgraceful generation that proudly calls evil, good, and good, evil. Canada is on a very slippery slope to impending destruction and we are falling fast. Greater, unprecedented disasters from the hand of Almighty God are sure to come in 2014 to our Christ rejecting nation. Only a national revival can prevent the certain judgment that will befall us before it’s too late. Revival always begins in the Church with prayer. It’s up to us to pray for Canada in a spirit of humble repentance for the sins of the nation—and our gracious God will yet hear our cry and heal our land.
