The Remedy For Our National Ills
December 21, 2012

In my devotional time with the Lord this morning, I read a verse that has always blessed me and has given me great assurance that once again, God will restore this fallen world back to Paradise again. The verse is Zechariah 8:5,  “And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets...”

In light of the recent school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, how strange this prophecy seems to us today in a generation that overflows with unbridled evil as evidenced by the senseless murder of 20 innocent children and eight adults. Jesus gave a chilling warning in Luke 17:2 to wicked perpetrators who caused one of His “little ones” to fall, referring to children who believed in Him. He warned that it would be better for that person to have a millstone hanged around their neck, and  cast into the sea. What could be worse than that imagery? And yet it shall be. My son called me after hearing the news of the tragedy and told me he went home after work that day and wept as he held his two precious children, aged 6 and 8. Julie and I cried as we watched the report and saw the twenty little faces of the “angels” whose innocent lives were violently snuffed out prematurely by the devil. The parents, grandparents and siblings will never be the same.

This sad incident which depicts our godless nation ever increasing in sin and unspeakable violence is scrambling to find the answer to our dilemma- the politicians blame the unrestricted ownership of guns as the root problem—their  solution is to remove the weapons. Doctors point their finger at mental illness as the trouble. Psychologists lay the fault on the bad childhood of the murderer who almost appears as the “victim” rather than the criminal. As noble as these “fixes” are, they are only the band-aid solution to the symptoms of the real source. The answer to this recent unimaginable slaying and every other horrific crime is so evident, it makes one wonder how any intelligent, civilized society could miss it? The Bible gives the only right answer, found in Proverbs 14:34, “Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people”. There it is—the spiritual remedy to the overall healing of our national ills if we’ll receive it, for—“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD...” (Psalm 33:12).  But God is not the Lord in our land.

Convenience and comfort is “Lord” in North America.
Greed and materialism is “Lord” in North America.
Personal rights and entitlement is “Lord” in North America.
Hedonism and sexual immorality is “Lord” in North America.
Sports and entertainment is “Lord” in North America.
Ecumenicism and religious pluralism is “Lord” in North America.

That is the basic reason why our nation is no longer blessed and our children are no longer safe playing in their streets and learning in their schools. How sad when our “little ones”, so full of life and faith and innocent trust have to fear that at any moment and in any place, someone might kill them. Just the other day, I was walking past a mom with her kids and I wondered what was going through her mind as she glanced at me? You can see it on people’s faces—fear, anxiety, uncertainty. It breaks your heart to know that our neighbourhoods have sunk to that level where trust and human kindness, that at one time epitomized the heart of America and Canada, have been tossed aside by the actions of evil people that have literally become victimized by the devil, not by society, as corrupt as it is. As born-again Christians, we were all “victims” of sin and iniquity before Christ cleansed us by His blood and transformed us into new people who now love God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength and who love our neighbours as ourselves. No society or government on earth can legislate that kind of love—it is only apprehended when the love of God rules and reigns in the hearts of regenerated men and women who have surrendered their lives to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and now live by the unconditional, supernatural law of love for one another. That is a glimpse—a snapshot, if you will, of what the coming future millennium will look like when our cities, once again, will be filled with children playing in their streets without fear. Never again, will we be subjected to “breaking news” reports of evil acts against our children. Even so, come Lord Jesus.
