The Reproach Of America
November 11, 2012

Now that the highly anticipated U. S. election has come and gone, and the emotions of shock and awe have somewhat leveled among conservatives and Christians who were sure they had a nationwide return to morality in the bag with Governor Mitt Romney, what does President Barak Obama’s re-election to the highest political office of the land for the next four years mean? It means that the people have spoken by way of the ballot and they want to continue in the path “that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof is they way of death”. (Proverbs 14:12). In other words, the American people have rejected God and the eternal principles of His Word; principles intended to save them and prosper them. Instead, they have willingly chosen the way of destruction. Hurricane Sandy was yet another wake up call for America to turn back to God, repenting of their wicked ways and He would have immediately forgiven them and brought spiritual, financial and political healing to their ill-fated land.

God presented this choice to back-slidden Israel in Deuteronomy 30:19-20, which applies to His people today as well. “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live”.

America has chosen death and cursing for this present generation by flatly rejecting God’s gracious offer of life and blessing as found in His holy Word. Our “enlightened”, postmodern society mocks the Bible as an outdated, old fashioned, irrelevant book of amusing stories, poetic literature and fearful depictions of an angry God who delights in condemning poor souls in their sincere quest for“life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”, apart from a list of binding, religious rules. That is nothing new. Man has always shunned truth for a lie. The prophet Jeremiah, who wept over the sins of Israel, knowing the righteous, due judgment of God that was pronounced for their persistent defiance against His Word wrote this—

“To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hear: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.” (Jeremiah 6:10). What a stunning depiction of our godless nation today that continues to reject warning after warning from a longsuffering but righteous God.

What will be the next disaster in America? And where? And to whom? And to what degree? And to what outcome? God only knows—but if we continue to harden our hearts towards Him and pursue the rebellious course we are blatantly following, we will become a reproach—a shameful disgrace among all nations of the earth, for we are the people who have been highly favoured and entrusted with the Light of the Gospel—a saving Light is quickly fading, because men love darkness rather than light, for their deeds are evil. I wonder when we sing “The Star Spangled Banner” if it has just become a routine of empty rhetoric with familiar lyrics and a stirring melody? But when you read the words of the final stanza, one realizes how far America has drifted in reproach, away from the reality of this God-honouring anthem.

“Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved home and the war's desolation!

Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: "In God is our trust":

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

Truly, “Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34).  Nothing can rescue America out of its fast slide to reproach except a mighty visitation of God’s Spirit bringing conviction of sin and repentance. This will now take nothing short of revival, beginning first with the Church that returns to the uncompromised Word of God with serious prayer, repentance and fasting.
