Superstorm Sandy
November 2, 2012

Who could have imagined the devastation that Sandy left behind in her 1000 mile swath as she bombarded the U.S. East Coast with hurricane winds and 12 foot storm surges? In spite of the stark warnings that were constantly broadcasted by the hurricane experts and even President Obama himself, the reeling aftermath was far worse than what we had expected, for this truly was the “storm of the century” for the American citizens in no less than fifteen states. Worst hit was New Jersey and New York. Canada was not excluded from its deadly blast. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims of this horrendous ordeal beyond any imagination. Just like you, Julie and I sat watching the constant and updated news reports with the photos that resembled a horrific war scene. Never have I seen such wide-scale destruction, not just in one city, but all throughout the eastern coast with entire suburbs and neighbourhoods wiped out. The word “unprecedented” is not an exaggeration in this latest national disaster with many deaths, millions without power, food and water shortages, thousands of homes destroyed and overcrowded shelters for the newly homeless. Fear, anger, shock, despair and hopelessness describe the mood. Where do you even begin to pick up the pieces and start over?

The sad reality is that this is not the end—it is the continuation of what Jesus called, “the beginning of sorrows” in Matthew 24, a chapter that discloses the utter horror of what shall befall the earth before He returns for His faithful Church. As you examine verse after verse, it’s like reading today’s “breaking news” headlines. The fact is, with the truth of God’s Word clearly presented to us, we in North America are without excuse. I’m not saying that by just acknowledging the “doom and gloom” prophecies that are being fulfilled will bring an end to God’s judgment and wrath upon our land—I’m saying that there is hope and help in the scriptures by following their warnings which are not idle threats, but certain judgment to all who defiantly refuse salvation through Jesus Christ. Hebrews 10:26-27 warns, “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.” The Bible clearly states in Acts 4:12, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” That name is none other than Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. He came the first time as the “lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world” but He is returning as King of kings and Lord of lords with mighty vengeance against all who reject His love and mercy.

Be sure of this—disasters and destruction will continue more and more in the days ahead even prior to the end of this year, 2012. “More intense and more rapid” is the description of what will be unfolding right before our shocked eyes. Jesus compared it to a woman ready to give birth as the labour pains come faster and stronger. This is not my mere opinion; as already stated, it’s all in Matthew 24. Read it for yourself. As I was praying for the people whose lives have been torn apart by Sandy, I was impressed that the West Coast was next. Sin, immorality and brazen ungodliness seem to be centralized in these areas. Hollywood will not be spared, for it is the very icon of decadence that plagues America and the world.

There is a solution to staying the hand of God’s wrath—it is simple and humble repentance for sin. Abortion on demand, same-sex marriage, hard-core pornography, rampant murder and violence are just a few of the unrestrained sins that reproach a holy God who sent His only Son to die for us that we might be saved from the wrath to come as depicted in the book of Revelation which foreshadows not hundreds, not thousands, not even millions, but billions of people killed through war, famine, disaster and disease. Unimaginable and yet so very true. Hebrews 2:3 admonishes, “How shall we escape if we neglect such great salvation?” God’s Word reveals the way of escape from this certain future of death and hell. God gave this remarkable promise of hope and healing in 2 Chronicles 7:14,

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” The key word in this promise is “if”.
