Message or Method?
August 31, 2012
 Dear Readers,

I wish I could take credit for this blog, but it actually was written by my first born son, Michael. I read it on his website and immediately wanted to post it here for you to read. It is not controversial nor judgmental--it is truth according to the Word of God! The Church needs to get back to the power of the Holy Spirit in our efforts to win the lost and edify the Body of Christ.

Message or Method?

1 Corinthians 2:4; My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power...

Is it the message of the Gospel that transforms lives or is it the method? I've heard it preached over the pulpit that the message is sacred, not the method. I don't know any more if I can agree with that view. We live in a day and age where it seems churches are striving to attract people. Churches have become the entertainers trying to win people to Christianity by what they offer. Often times you hear people say "our church offers this" or "our church offers that." Churches are using all kinds of differing proven methods for church growth. Shorter services, coffee breaks, secular songs, give aways… you name it, it's most likely been done. I've recently heard of a church trying to attract children to their VBS by giving away Justin Bieber paraphernalia.

Has the church so lost its power that we have stooped by trying to trick people to Christ? Has our sacred message become void of the power of the Holy Spirit, because we have caused a grievance due to our methods? Paul wrote to the Corinth church that he didn't come with anything persuasive but the Spirit's power. In fact, he states, "I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified…so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom." What happens when the method to the message fails? We've got seats full of people attracted to the method not the message. Once the method is gone so are the people. Once the hype has faded so has the faith.

Paul knew it was only going to be the power of the Holy Spirit which could build a person's faith, nothing more. In a day and age where the method has taken precedence over the message, we have grieved the Holy Spirit, and it's going to take a major repentance of this truth and a turning back to the simplicity of the Gospel message. If we strive for one thing, let it be that we strive to have fruit that remains. Methods come and go, and we see that same thing with the people in churches. But the message will remain unchanged, and the power of the Holy Spirit is the only thing that can change and transform the heart of an individual. The best method any church could use is to get on their knees in prayer to grow their churches.
