A Life That Pleases God
June 4, 2012

If I were to ask you, “What is the only way to please God?”, your obvious answer wouldl be “By faith!”, in which you would be completely correct. However, biblical faith is not faith until it is accompanied by works—in other words, put action to your faith! That is why James writes in James 2:18  "Show me your faith without actions. I will show you my faith by my actions."

Enoch is a little known Old Testament character mentioned only three times in Bible, and yet he was a powerful prophet of God! In fact, 5000 yrs ago, Enoch prophesied of Christ’s second coming to judge the world! Jude recorded Enoch’s searing prophecy under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in Jude 1:14-15. “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” Personally, I would not want to have to wait 5000 yrs for my prophecy to be fulfilled! How about tomorrow or next week! But Enoch spoke it in faith out of a deep closeness to God’s heart and Jude wrote it down 3000 years later and the prophecy is soon to be fulfilled!

Hebrews 11:5 verifies this truth of pleasing God through named Enoch. “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.” This one verse uses the word “translate” three times, which means “to transfer”. In other words, one moment, Enoch was on the earth and the next, he was transferred to Heaven! Enoch was one of only two men in the history of the world who never experienced death! The other was Elijah. How did Enoch please God? Again, the obvious answer is, “Through Faith!” Yes, because Hebrews 11:6 tells us that “without faith, it is impossible to please Him...”

But it was his faith supported by his actions that grabbed the attention of God—what exactly did he do? Noah built an ark; Moses delivered Israel out of Egypt; David killed Goliath; Solomon built the temple; Esther saved her people from destruction—all astounding actions of faith! But what did Enoch do that so pleased God? Genesis 5:22 gives us the startling answer in only four words- “Enoch walked with God...” Enoch and God took a 365 year walk together—and I complain after twenty minutes of walking  with Julie! The name, Enoch means “dedicated, to set apart for a special use” which begs the question: Are all Christians dedicated to God’s special use? Are all set apart by Him? Do all Christians please Him? Sadly, no! They could be and they should be, but they don’t walk with God as Enoch walked with God and had this testimony that he pleased God.

The compelling account in Matthew 4 of Jesus calling Peter, James & John to follow Him never ceases to amaze me every time I read it. They immediately left everything and walked with Christ! They turned their backs on all of their possessions, career, family and interests to follow the elusive call! No family discussions—no time to think it through—simple faith and obedience to the gripping invitation, “Follow Me”. Talk about a life that pleases God! So when Christ tells us to follow Him, He’s saying “Leave behind all of your cares, concerns, distractions and worldly ties and come take a walk with Me! Don’t worry about a thing—I know the way and I’ll take good care of you!” When your life is pleasing to God, you have an awesome future ahead of you! He assures us in Jeremiah 29:11, “I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope” When you are walking together with God on life’s highway not knowing the way ahead, your testimony is this—you please God!
